Stars, family honor Michael Jackson at funeral

Michael Jackson was buried on Thursday, more than two months after he died of a drug overdose, marking the last stop for a superstar who spent most of his 50 years in the public gaze.

The singer, whose enormous success with such albums as "Off the Wall" and "Thriller" was overshadowed in later years by his extravagant lifestyle and child molestation allegations, died on June 25 with a mix of prescription medications in his body.

The Los Angeles coroner ruled Jackson's death a homicide. Police are investigating several doctors and have said they will seek criminal charges, but so far none has been filed.

Security was very tight at the private evening funeral at the historic Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, near Los Angeles.

Fans and reporters were kept away from the 200 guests, including actress Elizabeth Taylor, Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, musician Quincy Jones and Jackson's ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley.

The Jackson family entourage was the last to arrive, showing up more than an hour later than scheduled in a convoy of 30 limousines, some members waving to a cheering crowd of more than 400 people.

A few minutes later, a hearse drove through the cemetery accompanied by four police officers on motorcycles.

The outdoor ceremony lasted for about an hour before the pop star was interred in a crypt in the vast mock-Renaissance Grand Mausoleum, a family spokesman said.

The pallbearers were Jackson's five brothers -- Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy -- who performed similar honors at a public memorial service in July.

ACTORS, LAWYER AT FUNERAL

The ceremony began with Jackson's three children placing a crown on their father's coffin, the spokesman said.

Speakers included Jackson's father Joseph, whom the singer often accused of abusing him as a child, and civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Others guests included actors Corey Feldman, Chris Tucker, Macaulay Culkin and his girlfriend Mila Kunis, Thomas Mesereau, the attorney who successfully defended Jackson in his 2005 child molestation trial, and Kenny Ortega, the choreographer on Jackson's planned comeback tour.

Officials have said a cocktail of medications, including the powerful anesthetic propofol and sedative lorazepam were the primary causes of Jackson's death.

While several doctors who treated Jackson have been investigated, police have focused on his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, who was at his bedside when he suffered a heart attack in a rented Los Angeles mansion.

Murray was hired by concert promoter AEG Live in the weeks before Jackson's death to watch over him as he rehearsed for a series of comeback concerts in London, scheduled to start in July. Those concerts were to have helped the singer pay off debts and shore up his finances.

EU's Barroso plans "radical" action to cut CO2

Europe must take bold steps to strip carbon emissions out of its transport and electricity generation systems, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said on Thursday.

"We need to start working now on a radical pathway to reaching a far more sustainable Europe by 2020," Barroso said in a policy document laying out his priorities if he wins a second five-year term.

"The next Commission needs to maintain the momentum toward a low emission economy, and in particular toward decarbonizing our electricity supply and the transport sector -- all transport, including maritime transport and aviation, as well as the development of clean and electric cars."

"Decarbonizing electricity supply and transport will also bring additional benefits in terms of security of energy supply," he said in the document intended to ensure he wins the backing of the European Parliament.

Barroso has already won the backing of member states and no rival candidate has emerged, but needs the support of his Socialist, Liberal and Green opponents in the 736-member parliament to win a vote of approval.

The parliament has consistently taken a greener approach than the EU's 27 heads of state during negotiations over the last two years over EU energy reform and measures to curb pollution from cars and industry.

CRITICAL

The Green party, which has been fiercely critical of Barroso's unchallenged return to power, said it would not comment until he had faced questions from its members at a meeting next week.

Environmental campaigners gave a guarded welcome to Barroso's acknowledgement that climate change requires an urgent response.

"But many questions remain on how he is going to concretely put Europe's economy on a sustainable pathway," said Joris den Blanken of Greenpeace. "There is still no plan to reduce Europe's depletion of natural resources like forests and fish."

Barroso said cutting carbon emissions would have the added benefit of curbing reliance on costly oil and gas imports and could create jobs if European companies took advantage of their head-start.

"One of the next great European projects is to give Europe a new European supergrid for electricity and gas.... so that we have secure and stable supplies of energy which meet our climate change goals," Barroso added.

The conservative former Portuguese prime minister highlighted recent progress toward building power connectors in the Baltic region and toward building the Nabucco pipeline to bring gas from the Caspian region.

"The next five years will not only need to see these projects come to fruition, but also new initiatives such as a Mediterranean interconnection plan, interconnections for gas, electricity and oil, as well as links between African suppliers and the EU.

German Skiers Wear Caps with Belgian Colours

Some 30 German skiers at the Winter Olympics have to wear caps in Belgian national colours after team sponsor Adidas supplied them with the wrong gear.

An Adidas spokesman said on Wednesday the firm had provided German athletes in biathlon and Nordic combined with caps in Belgium's black-gold-red instead of Germany's black-red-gold.

"We regret this technical mistake and do apologise to all athletes," Jan Runau said, adding that caps with the right colours would now be produced but not arrive until next week.

Among German athletes competing in the caps were Martina Glagow, who won bronze at the women's biathlon 15 km on Monday, German media said.

CDC Leery of Swine-Flu Death Estimate

While the swine flu seems quite easy to catch, it so far hasn't been more deadly than the flu strains seen every fall and winter - many people have only mild illness. And close genetic tracking of the new virus as it circled the globe over the last five months so far has shown no sign that it's mutating to become more virulent. See the top 5 swine flu don'ts.

Still, the CDC has been preparing for a worst-case flu season as a precaution - in July working from an estimate slightly more grim than one that made headlines this week - to make sure that if the virus suddenly worsened or vaccination plans fell through, health authorities would know how to react.

On Monday the White House released a report from a group of presidential advisers that included a scenario where anywhere from 30 percent to half of the population could catch what doctors call the "2009 H1N1" flu, and death possibilities ranged from 30,000 to 90,000. In a regular flu season, up to 20 percent of the population is infected and 36,000 die.

"We don't think that's the most likely scenario," CDC flu specialist Dr. Anne Schuchat said of the presidential advisers' high-end tally.

What's really expected this year? CDC won't speculate, finding a numbers game pointless as it tries to balance getting a largely complacent public to listen to its flu instructions without hyping the threat.

Along with how the virus itself continues to act, the ultimate toll depends on such things as vaccinations beginning as planned - currently set for mid-October - and whether the people who need them most get them. CDC also is working to help hospitals keep the not-so-sick from crowding emergency rooms and to properly target anti-flu drugs to the most vulnerable.

What is likely: A busy flu season that starts earlier than usual, Schuchat told The Associated Press. This new H1N1 strain never went away over the summer, infecting children at summer camps in particular. Already clusters of illnesses are being reported at some schools and colleges around the country.

China, U.S. may cooperate on world's biggest telescope

Astronomers from China and the United States may cooperate on building the world's largest telescope aimed at providing deeper insight into the very early stages of the universe, Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.

The Thirty-Meter-Telescope (TMT), conceived and headed by the University of California and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), is expected to be completed in 2019, the official Chinese news agency said.

"It is a big undertaking and it will define the future of astronomy and astrophysics for about 60 or 70 years, so it will automatically involve a large international community," said Caltech President Jean-Lou Chameau in an interview with Xinhua.

Xinhua said the university and Caltech are talking to Chinese astronomers and scientists about cooperation on funding and technology, although no final decision has been made.

Canada and Japan have signed up to the project, which needs total financing of $1 billion, it said.

The telescope, with a mirror 30 meters in diameter, will have the sharpest view possible of the universe and will pick up images of galaxies and stars forming 13 billion light years away. It will be located on top of Mauna Kea, Hawaii.

Saudi king visits prince injured in suicide attack

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Saudi state television reports a Saudi prince who was slightly injured by a suicide bomber says he is more determined than ever to pursue the kingdom's campaign against terrorism.

The comments by Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, assistant interior minister, came during a Friday meeting with King Abdullah.

The prince was targeted by a suicide bomber late Thursday during a gathering of well-wishers for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It was the first known assassination attempt against a member of the royal family since Saudi Arabia began its crackdown on al-Qaida affiliated militants following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The Interior Ministry has spearheaded the kingdom's crackdown.
